Arohanui Strings Registered Charitable Trust is a Sistema inspired music education program in Taita/Pomare, Lower Hutt, NZ, that is part of a visionary global movement transforming the lives of children through music.   The Sistema goal is to help children in high depravation neighborhoods to reach their full potential, using teamwork, harmony and ensemble playing.  Each child is given his/her own instrument and world-class instruction 2-4 days a week for 2 hours a day after school. The discipline of learning an instrument, and the experience of playing music together, transforms the lives of children, helping them become a positive force in their community.  Recognizing the power of  Sistema to create social change, music programs based on the Venezuelan music miracle now exist in more than 25 countries including Australia, Canada,  England,  Scotland, South Africa, and the USA.
Improvement in academic achievement, attitudes, attendance, and conduct among children enrolled in Sistema music programs is astounding and recently verified in the Institute of Public Policy’s 2012 Evaluation of Sistema Aotearoa.  To read more about research showing the impact of music education on individuals and society as a whole, please read The Impact of Music Education.
